gooomoon:

A fairy ring is a naturally occurring ring of mushrooms. They are also known as pixie’s rings, faerie circles, or elf circles. The English believed that fairy rings were where fairies came to dance and celebrate, the mushrooms of the rings were used as stools for the fairies to recuperate during the evenings festivities.

When I was young I spent a lot of time in Ireland because my parents would always want to go back to their homes often. My mum used to tell me about faerie circles and she said that if you disturbed the ring by touching it, all the magic creatures would come and get you. I actually saw one of these rings for myself and was terrified the elves would come for me.

HANK HAS TO SCIENCE ON THIS

When the spore of some kinds of mushroom hits the ground to begin its life cycle, it will radiate out from the point of genesis with tiny little threads called mycelium which are actually the physical body of the fungus. The mycelium stretches throughout the soil, feeding by decomposing matter and, if there’s good food and consistent soil structure in every direction, it will radiate out in a nearly perfect circle. Eventually, when the center of the ring runs out of nutrients, the fungus goes into it’s spore production phase, and sends up “mushrooms” or the fruiting bodies of the fungus. These are all produced at the same time around the edge of the mycelium, taking all of the nutrients from the mycelium to produce these reproductive spore factories.

So each mushroom is not an individual organism, but rather the fruit of a sort of sub-surface fungal tree.

To me, this is even cooler than elves and fairies.

How to Raise Racist Kids

Step One: Don’t talk about race. Don’t point out skin color. Be “color blind.”

Step Two: Actually, that’s it. There is no Step Two.

Congratulations! Your children are well on their way to believing that <insert your ethnicity here> is better than everybody else.

Surprised? So were authors Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman when they started researching the issue of kids and race for their book NurtureShock. It turns out that a lot of our assumptions about raising our kids to appreciate diversity are entirely wrong:

Click to read the article!

don’t you just love it when people finally accept the glaringly obvious? i know a lot of people that need to read this

The article above is great, as is this one on how to talk about racism with kids.

They raise kids who love the, “But I don’t SEE race, you’re racist for bringing up race” argument.

The Rule of Thumb
There’s a rule of thumb...

putthison:

The Rule of Thumb

There’s a rule of thumb (literally) that’s often passed around for how to determine the proper length of a suit jacket or sport coat. As it goes: you want the hem of your jacket to hit around the thumb knuckle, the one between the end of your thumb and where the thumb’s joint meets the palm. Some also say that your hands should be able to just cup the hem of your jacket when you have it on, but this is essentially saying the same thing.

This rule, however, is somewhat mixing up the order of how traditional tailoring is done. In the past, when men went to bespoke tailors to have their suits made, tailors would eye where a jacket should hit, and then use a man’s thumbs or knuckles as a reference point for future commissions. Which makes sense. The proper length of a jacket is more about how it works in concert with the other parts of your body, thus making things look as well proportioned as possible. It’s not about just meeting wherever a man’s knuckle happens to sit. The “rule of thumb” works for most men, but what about those with longer or shorter arms? Should they have to sacrifice the proportion of their suits just so the hem hits the “correct” place?

Of course, nowadays, most men buy off-the-rack, so they have to rely on their own eye for whether a jacket is long enough. One principle – and this is the one that I think is best – is that the hem of your jacket should roughly break at the midsection between the floor and the back of your coat’s collar (i.e. the highest point on your jacket). There’s some wiggle room here though. A casual jacket can be a touch shorter, whereas a business suit may need to stay traditional.

To determine this, you’ll need a full-length mirror and about ten or twelve feet of distance to view yourself accurately. If you’re standing too close, you’ll distort your view and the proportions of your suit may look right when they’re actually not. So, if you can’t get a good look, we have a more generalized rule: a sport coat or suit jacket should at least cover your posterior.

That’s not a bad rule to follow, but remember: at the end of the day, where a suit jacket’s hem should end is about proportions and balance. Be careful of the trend towards shorter coats, as they can make you look as though you’re wearing your little brother’s jacket. And beware of overly long jackets, which can make your legs look unusually short. As always, what’s best is what flatters you the most.

First I need to preface this by saying if you are Gujarati or Wolof and find error with what I post I am more than open to changing it, just send a message. I’d love some input.

I’m heavily mixed-race. You cannot tell by looking at me but that’s another discussion for another time. Usually, I avoid disclosing my BQ because it is irrelevant to the topic at hand but in this case it is necessary to do so indirectly. Below is an abbreviated family tree that shows both birthplace and ethnicity of my non-mixed grandparents and great-grandparents (i.e. It shows direct descent and no aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.)

In short, the most prominent backgrounds I have documented blood relation to are (in descending order) Cherokee, Kalderaš Řomani, Scottish, Gujarati, Wolof, and German.

I was raised in a trilingual household with heavy influence from both my paternal and maternal grandmothers. Because of this I was raised trilingual in English, Cherokee, and Kalderaši řomanes and deeply imbedded in both cultures.

The only things I have from being Wolof and Gujarati are a few recipes, heirlooms and a few customs but none of them are prominent enough for me to identify as Gujarati or Wolof in good faith.

I am Cherokee, and I am Řomani. I’m mixed-race and very white-passing.

To go running around in the kurta my grandfather wore to his wedding (one of the heirlooms) while covered in henna for a photo shoot to make me seem ~exotic~ or to make a painting and market it as “Authentic Wolof Art” just because I have Gujarati and Wolof ancestry would be inappropriate and unacceptable. I was not raised in those cultures, I have no idea what it’s like to grow-up as a member of either group. If I were to pull this distant blood-line out of my ass as a cheap defence if I paraded around making an absolute mockery of myself and the cultures I claim to be proud of, it’d be an insult to members of the cultures, myself, and my family.

So when you think about saying “Don’t fucking tell me what to do, I’m part native american” think about those of us who grew up raised in the cultures, maybe think about stating your tribe of ancestry, and don’t say “I’m part Native American” maybe say something along the lines of “I’m descended from [Tribe] and admittedly know nothing of the culture. I’d like to reconnect and I’m sorry my attempt was uninformed” or SOMETHING that isn’t confrontational and reeking of entitlement because let me tell you, a lot of us will help you reconnect to your culture if you are humble and respectful about it.

What do a ‘Communist draft-dodging homosexual sex-pervert’ and a ‘Civil Rights hero’ have in common?

Well, for starters, they’re sometimes the same person.

Bayard Rustin was an activist, teacher and administrator who played a key role in the Civil Rights movement — he acted as a secretary to Dr Martin Luther King, helped organise the Freedom Rides and bus integration protests, and was the key organiser for the 1963 March on Washington, at which King gave his ‘I Have A Dream’ speech.

So why have you never heard about Bayard Rustin in history class?

Because Bayard Rustin was gay.

In 1953, he was arrested in Pasadena, California for having consensual sex in a parked car with two male partners. He was initially charged with vagrancy and lewd conduct: the charges were later altered to a lesser count of ‘sex perversion’, to which he pleaded guilty. After his conviction, he was asked to leave the Fellowship of Reconciliation, the pacifist Civil Rights organisation that he worked for, and was later shunned or encouraged to take a behind-the-scenes role by many members of the movement (it’s important to remember that this may not have been completely due to the homophobia of the other civil rights leaders — they were acting under the fear of being smeared or blackmailed by right-wing opposition). Nevertheless, he managed to live through this stigma, and spent the rest of his life working for both African-American and gay civil rights.
